BDS installations ahead of schedule

A state-of-the-art biohazard detection system (BDS) is

well on its way to full deployment at USPS processing and

distribution centers (PDCs). So far, 114 PDCs have BDS

units installed — state-of-the-art, self-contained and fully

automated devices that protect the public and Postal

Service employees from biohazards. The installation has

been so successful that the planned deployment to all 282

PDCs nationwide is being accelerated, with a target dead-

line of December 2005.

Tracking international forgers

More than 3,700 counterfeit postal money orders were

intercepted from October to December, exceeding the total

for the previous 12 months, according to the Postal Inspec-

tion Service, with most of the forgeries originating in

Nigeria, Ghana and Eastern Europe. Inspectors are warn-

ing financial institutions to be vigilant and are working to in-

tercept packages containing bogus money orders as they

enter the country. Arrests of 160 individuals have been
